December

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

As 2017 comes to a close, I realize we have accomplished so much but yes we still have so much more to still do. Do you look at the school year as a glass saying it is half empty or half full? I hope you realize you have filled your students with so much knowledge and experiences already this year! I hope you take some time to reflect on all you have accomplished so far. Yes we Begin with the End in Mind and we keep reaching but reflection is important.

I reflect on a regular basis when colleagues ask me how we do things here or how we have handled things. It is a good feeling when I can respond with all the wonderful ways we collaborate toward Student Success. Also, when James and I finish a drop in or walk through and we can say, "our staff is top notch" or "so in so is killing it"! This has been happening so much. We are thankful for all the hard work you have put in to get where we are today. Below you can see our collective ratings on the Marzano elements scored so far this year. Job well done everyone! Makes us so proud.

Another point of reflection that I want to share is our climate survey. We are definitely headed in a positive direction. I know that we, your leadership team, don't always do everything that you think we should but we hope this is indicative of the fact that you believe we are doing what is best for kids.

Thank you all for what you do each and every day! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season filled with love and joy (and REST)!

Happy Holidays!
Adrienne and James

Deliberate Practice Nov. 2017

Good Morning Deep Creek School Family,

Thank you to everyone who has selected their Deliberate Practice Element for the year. I want to explain Deliberate Practice a bit more before we begin this season of evaluations. Our DPPs as are the Marzano elements linked to improving student achievement.
Next, here is the official definition of deliberate practice. Notice you are the driving force of your DPP. It is your learning so own it!
Now comes our part, WE need to give you feedback! Focused feedback. One time visit per year is not a good representation of feedback. Therefore, James and I need to visit when you are practicing your DPP. Please schedule us to come in for 20-30 minutes when you are working on your DPP before we leave for winter break. This will give you a good opportunity to practice and us to give you feedback. We don't want any surprises at the evaluation just like we don't like our students/parents to have any surprises at report card time.

I want to take some time to explain the scale for observing your DPP. Everyone wants to innovating, right? To be innovating here are some explanations. You have to be in the autonomous phase for that element. It must be fluent for you to use it with your students.

Percentage of students benefiting and engaged in the strategy/element!
Let's work on the work together!

Sincerely,
Adrienne

A little bit of normal

Good Monday Morning to all our Deep Creek School Family,

As I said on Friday, I am looking forward to a little bit of..
It is hard to say what a normal week will look like this early in the school year but one where we are all together and we can follow a routine will be a great start. I hope as we return on Monday that we all will have power restored so our home life can have some normal as well. Please refer to the tips Mrs. Olby sent out on Friday when encountering students on Monday. Every students' experience can be different.

Time Flies 8/27/17

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

It is hard to believe we are a month into school already. Time sure does fly when we are busy. The Monday Morning Memos are going to take a different feel this year and I am reducing the frequency. This is my fifth year as principal and I feel our needs have changed so the MMM will change too.

We are off to such a great start. I want to take a time to thank you all for making Deep Creek such a wonderful place to work and for our students. I know things are stressful especially things out of our control such as insurance changes. I thank you all for remembering our students have nothing to do with that. As I have been visiting classrooms, it is so inspiring to see how each of you work your magic with students every day.

Cub Club continues to be a wonderful addition to our school. The financial contributions are very helpful both to the school and the staff that work it but the experiences our students receive from the program are phenomenal. Thank you to everyone who continues to make this program successful. We have been able to purchase and provide things that a few years ago we could not have imagined being able to do.

On Friday evening, I heard the DOE denied our appeal of our school grade. We will continue pushing forward with our initiatives and making sure Deep Creek is a great place for students and staff. Our official school improvement plan is almost complete.

We are finalizing our committees and PLCs this week. I look forward to the work these groups complete.  These require a commitment from members to make our events and initiatives great. Let us remember, “many hands make light work”. Thank you all in advance.

Have a great week,
Adrienne

Make sure you check the calendar daily!

Welcome Back 2017-2018

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

We hope you have all had a restful summer! We will have a Harry Potter themed treat for you all on the professional development day, Monday, August 7th. (Harry Potter fans you will be right at home—the rest of you might want to binge watch some of the movies!)

Many of you have already started getting your rooms ready but for those that have not, hopefully you will notice the special attention the custodial crew paid to our building this summer. Please remember if you are here before the official first day (Friday), you must remove your own food trash daily.  In your classrooms, you will find your gift from PTO of a case of paper and a pack of dry erase markers. Also, you will find your Social Studies TEs have been checked out to you. Your grade level planning rooms contain the workbooks associated with the district adopted curriculum.

Building hours are: 7:00-4:00 through Monday, 8/7
Saturday 8/5 8:00-12:00 and Sunday 8/6 12:00-4:00
7:00-9:30 starting Tuesday 8/8

Just a reminder that PPC switched our professional development day from Friday to Monday. This allows you to have Friday to work in your classroom. Please plan on joining us in the café at 7:45 Monday morning for a full day of professional development and a little Harry Potter fun. Bring your ticket to Platform 9 3/4 with you for special drawings.

I am truly looking forward to a wonderful year where we remember to turn on the light for ourselves, our students, and colleagues! Enjoy your last few days of summer vacation.

See you Friday,

As the 2016-2017 year concludes...

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

I am sitting here tonight (Wednesday) thoroughly tired but pleasantly pleased. The last two weeks have been whirlwinds of excitement. All the award assemblies were memorable experiences for our Cubs and their families. You all should be proud of your accomplishments with your students this year.  I hope you enjoyed the last day with your students. I truly thank you all for your hard work this year. Each year we face unique challenges yet we overcome them together because that is what we do! I have no doubt next year will be challenging as well but I have faith that we will overcome whatever is presented to us. Every family has strife and happiness within them. My hope is we can find more and more happiness within our school family each year. I am very proud to part of this school family. I could never thank you enough for all you do each day.

Please leave for summer knowing we had a great year regardless of FSA scores or school grade (whenever they come in). I certainly hope we are celebrating but even if not our students left happy and full of new knowledge and that is important to me!

Rest this summer! Spend time with your families. Reflect and grow in your profession.

Thanks for all you do,
Adrienne

Weekly Reminders:

Have an AWESOME summer!

Happy Staff Appreciation Week!

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

We hope you have all enjoyed staff appreciation week. I am sure you notice many things refer to teaching and even though your job title may not be teacher we all TEACH! Every single day I see cafe ladies, custodians, paras, office staff, volunteers, and bus drivers teaching in one manner or another. When we title these Deep  Creek School Family we do mean it! We are a family and it takes every single one of us to teach our students! We do appreciate our teachers for what they do but we appreciate everyone for what we do collectively! So THANK YOU for all you do each day!

Many people have asked who a particular lunch or gift is from so I wanted to explain so you all know how we bring this week together. This week is a joint effort between PTO and administration. We share many costs and we definitely share labor and efforts. Special thanks to Kristy Lawson, Jenny Johnson, Marie Brown, Sandra Howard, and Mary Crawford. Without them this week would never have happened.

We hope you enjoyed the special food and treats throughout the week! From the bottom of our hearts, we do appreciate each one of you!

Thanks,
Adrienne and James

Finishing Strong

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

After Christmas break,  the talk on the first day back was about how it was important to look at what worked well, what needed adjustments, and move forward with each.  Now as the end of the school year approaches it's important to finish strong.  This time of year is an emotional time. Each one of you have built strong relationships with students and this time of year often leaves students with mixed emotions.  With these feelings, summer approaching, and testing, it is difficult for the entire school.

That is why it is so important to remain prepared for instruction, focused on classroom management, and make sure the classroom procedures you have worked hard to build all year do not fall by the way side.  Free time and unstructured activities will not promote the atmosphere that has been built.

Included below is a link to a quick article that shares some ways to help students handle the emotions that come with the conclusion of the year.  Let's work hard to finish the year strong and give the students the conclusion to their learning that they deserve.

Have a great weekend.
James

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

Professional Development is relevant in any field, but is especially important for educators so that we can best meet the needs of our students.  We have recently begun receiving information on the CIA Investigation or Summer Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Professional Learning Conference that is taking place on June 1st & 2nd.  CCPS employees have an advantage as our district is offering a large number of PD opportunities.  There are full day events, Breakout Sessions, and Action Labs  for teachers and paraprofessionals throughout the two days.  Bonus…you get paid to attend. A highlight is that our own Paul Rigatti will be the Keynote Speaker on Friday.
The following is an excerpt from an article in Teaching Tolerance Magazine.  I found it to be very timely as it connects professional development with academic success.  Much of our upcoming PD focuses on subject matter and student learning.  Find a session that inspires you and will boost the performance of your students.  Check your email for all of the CIA Investigation details.  You can also find a list of classes on each table in our Staff Lounge.  Sign-up soon as spaces will fill quickly.
I hope that you each have a fantastic 3 day weekend and that you Sharpen the Saw with friends and family.  For those who celebrate, Happy Easter!

Marie

Teaching Teachers: Professional Development To Improve Student Achievement

Professional Development:  Leadership

Overview:

Good teachers form the foundation of good schools, and improving teachers’ skills and knowledge is one of the most important investments of time and money that local, state, and national leaders make in education. Yet with the wide variety of professional development options available, which methods have the most impact on student learning?

Research on professional development is scattered throughout subject areas, with its focus ranging from classroom processes and structures to teachers’ personal traits. We have limited our review to learning opportunities for teachers that are explicitly aimed at increasing student achievement.

What Are Teachers Learning?
FOCUS ON TEACHING SKILLS
Research on the links between teacher learning and student achievement is divided into two waves. The first wave, beginning in the 1960s, focused primarily on “generic” teaching skills, such as allocating class time, providing clear classroom demonstrations, assessing student comprehension during lectures, maintaining attention, and grouping students.
These studies showed small to moderate positive effects on students’ basic skills, such as phonetic decoding and arithmetic operations; in a few cases, reasoning skills also improved. For example, in an experimental study of fourth-grade mathematics in urban schools serving primarily low-income families, student achievement was greater when teachers emphasized active whole-class instruction — giving information, questioning students, and providing feedback — and more frequent reviews, among other measures. Student achievement also was enhanced when teachers learned to follow the presentation of new material with “guided practice” — asking questions and supervising exercises.
FOCUS ON SUBJECT MATTER AND STUDENT LEARNING
In the 1990s, a second wave of research delved deeper into student learning, focusing on students’ reasoning and problem solving potentials rather than only on basic skills. It suggested that professional development can influence teachers’ classroom practices significantly and lead to improved student achievement when it focuses on (1) how students learn particular subject matter; (2) instructional practices that are specifically related to the subject matter and how students understand it; and (3) strengthening teachers’ knowledge of specific subject-matter content. Close alignment of professional development with actual classroom conditions also is key.

Student achievement was consistently higher and growth in students’ basic and advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills was greatest when their teachers’ professional development focused on how students learn and how to gauge that learning effectively. This suggests that professional development that is rooted in subject matter and focused on student learning can have a significant impact on student achievement.
LINKING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TO TEACHERS’ REAL WORK
To be effective, professional development must provide teachers with a way to directly apply what they learn to their teaching. Research shows that professional development leads to better instruction and improved student learning when it connects to the curriculum materials that teachers use, the district and state academic standards that guide their work, and the assessment and accountability measures that evaluate their success.
Two recent studies that support focusing professional development on curriculum have implications for states striving to connect education policy to instruction. David Cohen and Heather Hill found that teachers whose learning focused directly on the curriculum they would be teaching were the ones who adopted the practices taught in their professional development. These teachers embraced new curriculum materials when they were supported by training and, in some cases, workshops about the new state-required student assessment. The study also showed that students of teachers who participated in this kind of curriculum-focused professional development did well on assessments. Unfortunately, most teachers received less effective forms of training.
How Much Professional Development Is Enough, and How Well Is It Working?
Studies suggest that the more time teachers spend on professional development, the more significantly they change their practices and that participating in professional learning communities optimizes the time spent on professional development. Therefore, it is striking that one national survey found that in nine of 10 content areas, most teachers said that they spent one day or less on professional development during the previous year.
While adequate time for professional development is essential, studies also show that by itself, more time does not guarantee success. If the sessions do not focus on the subject-matter content that research has shown to be effective, then the duration will do little to change teachers’ practices and improve student learning.
Conclusion
Our changing goals for learning, coupled with shifts in curriculum emphasis and a deeper understanding of teacher learning and student thinking, have led to new findings about the impact of teacher professional development and how best to sharpen teachers’ skills and knowledge.
What matters most is what teachers learn. Professional development should improve teachers’ knowledge of the subject matter that they are teaching, and it should enhance their understanding of student thinking in that subject matter. Aligning substantive training with the curriculum and teachers’ actual work experiences also is vital.
The time teachers spend in professional development makes a difference as well, but only when the activities focus on high-quality subject-matter content. Extended opportunities to better understand student learning, curriculum materials and instruction, and subject-matter content can boost the performance of both teachers and students.

Teaching lessons through stories

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

There is nothing like a good story and activity to help facilitate discussion among our students. Whether is be a lesson on how to stand up for oneself, how to deal with a loss, or how to be kind to others...I can always find a story to help reinforce smart decision making or to help a student cope with grief.
We, as educators, realize that not all of our students come to school equipped with the skills we think they should have. I have personally seen, through working with individual students and groups, that our students need to learn coping strategies and problem-solving skills.  My one-on-one time with students is mostly spent helping kids work out the problem, formulate attainable goals and setting a plan of action. I usually have a book on hand I can show students that pertains to their particular issue. The stories help them see that there CAN be a solution...with a little effort and practice, things can change for the better. As we know, our students come to us expecting to be taught, but not all come to us with the tools to learn, whether that be academically, socially, or emotionally. I believe we do a fantastic job everyday working together to help our students succeed in all areas.
Below are a few of my favorites, and I have many, many more in my office that you are welcome to borrow any time!

Thanks,
Noelle

All Day Every Day - Deep Creek Students are Attending School

Yesterday, I was presented with data that I want to share with all of you.  It is data that should make us all proud because it definitely takes the whole Deep Creek School family to make these attendance numbers occur.  For the second consecutive year, DCES is leading the county when it comes to average daily attendance of our students.  Currently, 96.16% of our students are attending school each day.  This data is displayed on Chart 1 below.

Chart 2, which is also below, shows the percentage of our students that have missed 10% of daily instruction.  The chart again shows that DCES leads the county with 3.8% of our students missing 10% of instruction, which is 24 out of 637 students.

The beginning of the year faculty meeting started with an agreement that WE ARE CUBS, and that agreement came with the pledge that as a school family, relationships would be built with students.  These relationships would help to build DCES as a place where students wanted to come each day.  It starts in the morning at bus stops (we have incredible bus drivers), it continues on campus where our entire staff (no group is excluded here, custodians, cafeteria staff, paras, front office, core) does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere where students want to arrive each morning.

Congratulations to all of us for achieving these current numbers.  Looking forward to finishing the year and continuing to emphasize the importance of our students attending school and leading the way in these categories.

Have a great weekend,
James

Technology 032417

Dear Deep Creek School Family,

Lucky Leprechaun has been such a great activity to add smiles to our faces after spring break. Thank you to everyone who has contributed toward those smiles! The upcoming canoe trip and baseball game should add some more smiles and smiles are one of the reasons DCES is so great!!!!

Technology continues to change and I appreciate all of you who embrace those changes and those of you that endure it with us. We can't ignore it as it is a part of our world now. Here is a great clip to help embrace technology.

Thanks for all you do!
