Monday Morning Memo 2.1.21

Happy Monday! I am feeling the weight of the second semester as I am sure that many of you are.  It is so important during this tough stretch of the school year that we find things to celebrate and tiny moments to breathe.  I loved getting to talk with several of you on Friday.  Some of these conversations were about how nice it was to feel like a school again as we marched through the courtyard in our costumes.  Others stopped by to share great news about a student that had grown academically on the most recent STAR test.  Others were excited just to share what their weekend plans were that were going to allow them to rest and be ready to tackle another busy week.  Check in on a friend this week, help them to take a moment to breathe, and let them share something positive that is going on in their world right now.

Custodial Crew Leader

This week we welcome a new staff member.  Please find a moment this week to introduce yourself to our new Custodial Crew Leader, Stephen Pappas. He starts on Monday and will be on campus for the day shift from 6:00 am-2:30 pm.  As you make requests for help in your rooms, be sure to have a little patience as he will be getting used to our campus layout, our materials/supplies, and all of our names.  We are excited to have him join our Cub family!

Celebrate Literacy Week

Last week was so much fun!  Our Cubs enjoyed getting to engage in reading activities and to dress up for the parade.  A big thank you to our Literacy Team that worked hard to plan these activities.  If you were able to capture any photos from the parade please add them to the google folder for Jackie and Alicen.

Employees of the Year

We wanted to congratulate, one more time, Mrs. Adler and Mrs. Skavroneck.  Both of these staff members truly represent what it means to love kids!  They both put their full heart into making DCE a better place and to make students love learning and reading each and every day.  We are very thankful that they were able to represent our school as our Teacher and Support Employee of the Year!  Congratulations to Kathleen for finding out last week that she has been named the CCPS Support Employee of the Year!

APM Testing

Monday is our APM (Adaptive Progress Monitoring) Assessment for mathematics for students in grades 3-5.  This assessment is very similar to the FSA.  We will be testing the majority of the morning from approximately 8:30am-11:00 am in all classrooms and planning rooms for these grade levels.  A few students that receive accommodations may be continuing to test in the afternoons as well.  Please avoid these areas as much as possible with your classes on Monday so that students can have optimal testing conditions.  The results of this assessment will indicate how on track our students are in preparation of our upcoming FSA test and where gap areas are that can be filled in the next few months.  We can't wait to get this data and see how much our students have grown since the first APM in October.  Wish our 3-5 students and teachers good luck if you see them in the morning!

Monday Morning Memo 1.25.21

Data

Thank you for participating in the mini Data Days during collaborative planning last week.  We hope that you found this time helpful to dig into the reports and understand the program and test results a little bit better.  Now that Data Days are over it is important that we use this data to drive our decision making.  This year it is especially important to maximize learning time to help close some of the gaps that were created as a result of Covid.  Every minute in the classroom matters.  Examine how you can tighten up transitions between subjects, look at your literacy station activities with a closer eye to determine if they match the standards and if they are advancing student learning, and study resources that you are downloading and using to be sure that they are truly aligned to our Florida content and test specifications.

This week we are not popping in to your collaborative planning sessions.  Please use this time to follow up with one another about your data.  What strengths can you pull from another teammate that will help you through the second semester?  What data of yours was strong that will allow you to share expertise with someone else on your team?  If you are in grades 3-5, what standards are coming up and what do the test item specifications and blue prints say should be emphasized?  We will rejoin your sessions soon and look forward to catching up with you about your data and your plans.

Celebrate Literacy Week

It is Celebrate Literacy Week.  This is always such a great week that reminds us to focus on the roots of learning and give our students opportunities to read great books.  We can't wait to see our students enjoying so many activities that the Literacy Team has planned. A big thank you to that team for coordinating a wonderful week for our Cubs!

Tornado Drill

This week we will hold our tornado drill.  When the announcement is made for the drill we will remain in our classrooms.  Students will practice the duck and cover method in their classrooms on the floor near their desks.  When the drill takes place we will be sure to walk your students through the steps this time and provide you a minute or two to explain where they would normally travel to.  This would include where students from J-building would normally go during a tornado watch and where all students would go for a tornado warning.  We will not be taking students to the hallway and having them sit close together due to our current health situation.  The drill will be conducted around 1:55 pm.

Awards

Award assemblies are starting this week.  Classes should arrive at their designated times and sit like they do for lunch (3 to a bench and by class with the next class filling in where they leave off).  Please turn in your award folders to the office the day before your celebration day if possible so we can be sure the awards are in order and ready to go.

This is a busy week!  Looking forward to so much fun!

Monday Morning Memo 1.19.21

We hope you all had a restful three day weekend!  This week is short, but brings some schedule changes as it is back-to-back planning week.  I apologize for the length of this memo... but there is some important information that pertains to our planning sessions this week!

Collaborative Planning - Data Day

Our students have just completed their middle of year assessment in STAR.  This is a great opportunity for us to check in on the progress of our students to see how they have been doing with a semester of our instruction under their belts.  The primary function of STAR progress monitoring is to check in frequently on the overall progress of our students.  This particular assessment is brief which allows us to assess more frequently to look at the trends of our students.  Looking at this data is different than looking at the i-Ready data that we are used to, but it yields great information.  Marie has been working hard to put together a brief data for teachers during this week's collaborative planning sessions.  She is going to try to get through her data session and still leave your team time for planning.  Please keep the following things in mind as you go into these sessions:

1. STAR is new to all of us.  Looking at and understanding the data will be a learning curve for all of us.  Marie has gathered a few reports that we think will be helpful to dive into now.  You may also have questions that she may not be able to answer as she is learning this program as well.  Be open and receptive during these sessions, and know that if Marie does not have the answer to a questions that you have that she will track it down for you as quickly as possible following your session.

2. Data is data.  It is not personal.  Please go into this session with an open mind and a willingness to learn, grow, and help one another.  Our students are not just numbers, and neither are we as educators. Please know that we think of you and our students as more than just that!  But, these numbers do help us in making decisions.  They help us determine if we are on the right path and if we are making the right decisions in how we spend our minutes in our daily instructionally.  There will be times for all of us, that a peer will have better data than we do.  It is important that we take a moment to ask them what they may be doing that has helped lead them there.  In addition, it is important for those of you that may have successful data in an area to really be reflective about why your data may be that way and share your strategy with your peers, no matter how simple your technique may be.  There was a teacher that I was working with years ago that said, "I think my data is good in math because I hold students accountable."  I was surprised by that statement and asked them to elaborate.  They said, "No matter what, I do not accept them not trying.  I show them I love them, and that because I do, I expect them to do what I know they are capable of doing."  I went to her room to observe.  What she said was absolutely true.  I don't think I had ever seen a teacher love so deeply, but also expect nothing less than full effort from her students.  There was a true desire from the students to prove to their teacher that they could live up to what she believed in them!

3. Celebrate!  When looking at the data we are seeing so many things that we are excited about! Please make sure that you take a moment to stop and celebrate what you are happy to see in your data and your teams data.  This year has been unlike no other.  We have been up against barriers and our students are working to overcome a period of time that they can't necessarily get back.  We have made strides during a period of time that is difficult.  We need to take a moment and breathe... feeling proud of what you have already accomplished.

4. Change is hard.  Sometimes, when we look at data it makes us aware of a change that needs to be made.  Change is scary, but sometimes we need to jump in and own it!  This year especially, we need to maximize every move we make and moment in the day for our students.  As you examine your data for this first data day, think about the big picture.  For example, are you completing a daily activity with your students that is currently taking too long and not yielding the results that you would have hoped?  Would those minutes better be served with another task?  Are you using your paraprofessional as effectively as possible?  Is there a group of students that would benefit from some positive reinforcement and accountability to increase their motivation or use of strategies?  Are you planning for guided reading well and using the time that students are in centers to get the biggest bang for your buck? Is your mindset right when working with a particular group of students or in a particular subject area?  Do they see your belief in them or your excitement for the content?

Community of Leaders

James and I found out last week that we were selected by the University of Washington and the Florida Department of Education to participate in a cohort group of school and district leaders from across the state that we had applied for.  Throughout the remainder of the year we will be participating in professional learning sessions and collaborative learning walk sessions that will grow us as instructional leaders.  Our first sessions begin this week virtually.  They, of course, were scheduled on Tuesday and Friday during your planning sessions.  We hate to miss your data days, but know that you are in good hands with Marie!  We are excited to be learning about the roll out of the new BEST standards and how to be prepared as instructional leaders throughout the upcoming years as we make this transition.  Phebe Westby has a quote that she says all the time by Maya Angelou that I love, "When you know better, you do better."  As new administrators we know that we have a lot to learn and are always seeking opportunities to do it collaboratively with others.  We hope to learn some amazing things that we will be able to pass on to all of you!

Have a great week,

Monday Morning Memo 1.11.21

Thank You!

Thank you all for returning from winter break healthy, well-rested, and excited to see our Cubs.  Last week threw some unexpected things our way like splitting buses, late buses, new students, furniture deliveries, and more!  We were all tired by the end of the week... but we made it through. James and I say this a lot, but we really can't thank you enough for all you do to keep smiling!

STAR Testing:

STAR testing takes place this week.  This is an important data point for us.  We have now had our students in school for in-person learning for two quarters and we can now get a pretty accurate estimate of how much progress they have made since returning from quarantine in August.  Please be sure that your students take this test seriously and have optimal test conditions.  Double check that accommodations are set to on for those students that need them and that you are actively proctoring during the assessment.  We will be looking at this data closely to determine what gaps we may need to still close and where we need to head to next.  We are excited to be turning the corner to collaboratively plan using student data during our next back-to-back session.

Paraprofessional Meetings:

We will be holding our January paraprofessional meetings on Monday.  Para Ones (grade level paras) will meet at 9:00 in room H-117.  Para Threes should coordinate with their teacher and attend either the 1:00 or 2:00 meeting which will also be held in H-117.  If Para Ones have STAR testing during the 9:00 time slot, they can pop into a 1:00 or 2:00 meeting as well.

Picture Retakes:

Picture retakes will be on Tuesday in rom F-101.  Alicen sent out a sign-up sheet for picture times. If you were not photographed as a staff member during the original picture day, please get your photo taken as well!

Report Cards:

The report card posting window opens on Monday.  Saturday is a teacher work day, but teachers are NOT required to report to work.  James and I will be opening the building on Saturday for anyone that does want to come in to work in their rooms.  It will be open from 8:00am-1:00 pm.  Coming in is completely OPTIONAL.  Report cards will be due by Monday, January 18 at 7:20 am.

This Week's Schedule:

Looking forward to lots of great classroom observations this week! We will try to snap some photos and begin sharing out with you the greatness happening in all of our rooms.

Monday Morning Memo 1.4.2021

Happy New Year.  Keli and I both were able to relax and enjoy our families over the Winter Break and it was much needed.  So I hope all of you were able to do the same.  Your work is much appreciated, especially this year, and that break although short was well-deserved.

On the first day of school this year way back in August, we gave you Mission Possible shirts.  These shirts and the message from administration has remained the same.  Clearly it is understood that this is a difficult school year.  I'm not going to go through the obstacles, but some are impossible to ignore.  We can't control them, but we can control our attitude and effort.

Be sure to reflect on the mission that was given at the beginning of the school.  DCES was going to be the school that remembered the power of Nothing Less Than Our Success and GRIT.  How will you control your attitude and effort the remainder of this school year?  How will you help your students do the same?  Is DCES a better place each day because you are here?

Let's have a great second half of this 2020 - 2021 school year.  Happy New Year.

James and Keli
