Dear Deep Creek School Family,
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) says that 5 percent of American children have ADHD. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts the number at more than double the APA's number. The CDC says that 11 percent of American children, ages 4 to 17, have the attention disorder.Sep 4, 2014
Tips for teachers taken from Getting Schooled: 102 Practical Tips for Parents, Teachers, Counselors, and Students about Living and Learning with ADHD, by Margit Crane
1. Understand that ADHD is a much more complicated condition than you may believe.
2. Being the parent of a special needs child is exhausting.
3. ADHD is a real, medical condition. It is not the result of bad parenting.
4. Boys will more often "act out" their ADHD. Girls who have ADHD more typically present themselves as "daydreamers".
5. "ADHD is a brain difference most notable in societies or groups that require people to conform to a set of rules and a schedule."
6. ADHD students experience a good deal of frustration, confusion, and embarrassment, although they may not present that way to you. It must be scary to not be in control of your own behavior.
7. Depression and anxiety frequently occur with ADHD.
8. ADHD students with Inattentive type may miss instructions because they are concentrating hard on the task at hand. Check for understanding.
9. Teach self-advocating skills. This may be in their 504 Plan, but it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced. Don't expect your ADHD student to know how to advocate for themselves.
10. Consistency and predictability create kids who are happy to learn.
Here is more information!! I also have the book if you would like to look at it.
Take care,
Noelle
